King Edward II, father of Edward III Plantagenet, summarily abolished all Templar orders in both England and Scotland. Temple Church served as the official place of Christian worship for the Order of Balantrodach until dissolved in compliance with the Papal Bull issued by the Pope Clement V in 1312.
The Scottish Rite Temple takes root from this association between the Templars and Clan Sinclair. Henri St Clair, 2nd Baron of Rosslyn Castle, with whom Hugues served during the First Crusade, donated the land for the Order of Balantrodach.
With the approval of King David I, grandson of Crínán of Dunkeld, in 1128 Templars established their first seat of organizational government outside Palestine in Balantrodoch, now Temple, Midlothian, Scotland. As Jacques presaged just before being slowly burned at the stake, both men died within a year after his death. Pope Clement V had decreed the dissolution of the order four years earlier. The act effectively expunged the huge financial national debt he owed the Templars. In 1314 King Philip IV of France executed Jacques de Molay, the 23rd and last of the Templar Grand Masters. One source of their power began with the establishment of the first international banking structure that reaped huge profits from fees they charged to hold and disperse pilgrims' funds whilst they traveled to and from the Holy Land (sort of a precursor to the American Express card). In fact, towards the end of its existence, Templar's political and economic power rivaled that of any other in Europe, including most sovereign nations. At the time of the founding, Hugues would have been around fifty years old Godrey was more than half his age.ĭuring the following 200 years, Templars fought in every Crusade and thrived as an organization despite their vow of poverty. The original Templar insignia illustrates Hugues and his cousin Godfrey de Saint-Omer riding the same horse together as a way to portray the initial vow of poverty of the Order. During residency, Templars made extensive renovations and additions to the structure. Built over the site of King Solomon's Temple on Temple Mount in Old Jerusalem, construction of the basic layout of the mosque began sometime during the late 7th century. The Order established its first headquarters in the royal palace wing of the Al-Aqsa Mosque. The Catholic Church sanctioned the Templars as a Christian military order entitled to operate under its aegis ten years later. Baldwin II, King of Jerusalem, enfranchised Hugues and his partner Godfrey of Saint Omer for that purpose around 1119. Known originally as Order of the Poor Knights of Christ and the Temple of Solomon, Knights Templar's sacred mission was to preserve and protect European Christians making a pilgrimage to Palestine after the First Crusade.
